ks4: Health and Social Care

Vision Statement

The NCFE in health and social care  gives learners the opportunity to develop sector-specific knowledge and skills in a practical learning environment. The qualification covers the following content areas:

  • Health and Social care provisions and services
  • Job roles in health and social care and the values that underpin professional practice
  • Legislations, policies and procedures in health and social care
  • Human development across the life span
  • The care needs of individuals
  • How health and social care services are accessed
  • Partnership working in health and social care
  • The care planning cycle

Pupils will be assessed in the form of a synoptic assessment which is coursework completed within exam condition which will make up 50% of their final grade. The other 50% will be made up from an external written examination

Course Outline/Assessment Methods

BTEC Level 3 courses in Health and Social Care are highly specialised work-related courses that will give you the knowledge, understanding and skills that are needed to prepare for employment in the Health and Social Care sector and provide a good basis to go onto more advanced work related qualifications. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations and activities. The BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate is equivalent to one GCE A Level and a BTEC Level 3 Diploma is equivalent to two GCE A Levels.

In the extended certificate you will study the following units:

  • Unit 5: Meeting Individual Care and Support Needs (internally assessed)
  • Unit 1: Human Lifespan Development (externally assessed, 1 hour 30 mins exam)
  • Unit 11: Psychological Perspectives (internally assessed)
  • Unit 2: Working in Health and Social Care (externally assessed, 1 hour 30 mins exam)

In the diploma (double award) you will study the following units:

  • Unit 7: Principles of Safe Practice in Health and Social Care (internally assessed)
  • Unit 8: Promoting Public Health (internally assessed)
  • Unit 14: Physiological Disorders and their Care (internally assessed)
  • Unit 4: Enquiries into Current Research in Health and Social Care (externally assessed, 3 hour exam)

KS5: BTEC Health and Social Care

Vision Statement

The health service is one of the fastest growing industries and, in light of recent events, the health care sector is in greater demand than ever.

The content of the course is so wide and varied that whether you are interested in the human lifespan, individual care needs or anatomy and physiology, there will be so much to interest you. Heath and Social Care will work well in conjunction with so many other disciplines, including sociology, sport studies and biology.

Pupils will have the opportunity to participate in work experience, giving them skills and involvement in the sector. This would be invaluable and enhance future opportunities.

The qualification has been developed in consultation with higher education, as well as employers and professional bodies, ensuring that all pupils will be in the best possible position to gain employment.

KS5: T Level Education & Early Years

Vision Statement

Delivered by our highly effective Health and Social Care department, this T-Level is aimed at pupils that wish to develop both knowledge and practical skills in the education and early years sector.  T-Level qualifications combine classroom theory, practical learning and an employment based placement, to produce well rounded, work experienced individuals within specific areas; in this case it is the education and development of those in nursery and the initial stage of primary school education. 

Students will have the opportunity to develop their understanding of children and young peoples’ needs and behaviours, using this and effective communication to effectively plan and provide activities for them to develop. Whilst knowledge and these skills will be developed in a particular 

Students will be well supported through each of the core components, whether in the Academy or in the employer’s setting. Students will gain knowledge across a broad spectrum within the course coverage, but will be given the opportunity to specialise in a particular area when completing the employer based component.

The development of young people and their education is critical to society. Studying this particular area could lead to an extremely rewarding career path, allowing you to make a real difference to modern society.

Core component:

  • paper A written examination
  • paper B written examination
  • employer set project

In order to achieve a grade for core component, students must have results for both sub-components (the core (written) examination and the employer set project).

The combined results from these sub-components will be aggregated to form the overall core component grade (A*–E and U).

Occupational specialism component:

  • synoptic assignments

The student is also required to successfully achieve a distinction/ merit/ pass grade in one of the occupational specialism components. If the student fails to reach the specified level of attainment, they will receive a U grade.
