Sport Studies

KS4 BTEC Sport

Students with an interest in physical education can choose to study an academic qualification in key stage 4. Our students are taught the BTEC First Award in Sport and receive 5 lessons over two week timetable. While the students are not assessed in their physical performance, they will be expected to have an interest and have a good understanding of the rules and requirement of a number of different sports. Students will learn key concepts in sports psychology (the mind and how it affects performance), physiology (the body and how all the elements work together as exercise takes place) and fitness testing and performance. Students will sit an exam in one unit (fitness testing) and complete coursework as part of controlled assessment in the other units. They will be graded as either a pass, merit or distinction in each unit and the scores will be added together to form an overall grade.

KS5 BTEC National Diploma in Sport and Exercise

Students wishing to continue their interest in physical education can do so with a course in the sixth form. They have the option of either the EDXCEL BTEC National Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science (equivalent to 3 A level choices) or the EDXCEL BTEC National Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science (equivalent to 2 A level choices). The course is designed to provide the students with a vocational understanding of the types of job that are available if they choose sport and exercise as a possible career path. Students will be assessed in three different ways: an examination in Anatomy and Physiology, a controlled assessment task for psychology and written assignments in all the other units. Students doing the Diploma will take 8 units, the extended diploma is 13.
