The curriculum overview at the Hundred of Hoo Academy Physical Education aims to ensure that all pupils:
- Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
- Are physically active for sustained periods of time
- Engage in competitive sports and activities
- Lead healthy, active lives
Games lessons – KS3
Two hours of PE per week
During Year 7 students follow a programme where they will be taught the basis of Invasion games, Net wall games, Gymnastics, Health Related Fitness, Athletics and Striking and Fielding games. We teach the students the basic skills and tactics for these games, building on any past experiences they may have gained. During the first half term, all students will be tested on their practical skills in all areas of PE. This information will then be used to help with target setting.
The students in Year 8 are taught the same areas of experience as in Year 7, with a particular focus of developing their skills and knowledge. They will be asked to focus on some areas of coaching and self-management, including leading warm ups for small groups.
Pupils should be taught to:
- use a range of tactics and strategies to overcome opponents in direct competition through team and individual games [for example, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders, rugby and tennis]
- develop their technique and improve their performance in other competitive sports [for example, athletics and gymnastics]
- perform dances using advanced dance techniques in a range of dance styles and forms
- take part in outdoor and adventurous activities which present intellectual and physical challenges and be encouraged to work in a team, building on trust and developing skills to solve problems, either individually or as a group
- analyse their performances compared to previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best
- take part in competitive sports and activities outside school through community links or sports clubs
Games lessons – KS4
One hour of PE per week
Students well follow a programme which allows further skill development and creates a sense of independence. In a range of sports and activities students will be asked to lead warm ups and parts of the lesson, and encouraged to analyse their own performance and that of their team, developing appropriate feedback. Students follow a programme of participation where a variety of sports are offered through the year.Pupils should tackle complex and demanding physical activities. They should get involved in a range of activities that develops personal fitness and promotes an active, healthy lifestyle.
Pupils should be taught to:

KS3 and KS4 - Fit-Fix
Fitfix is a 12-week course designed to help young people work towards a healthy weight who are aged 12-17. By encouraging healthy eating and physical activity, fitfix helps to improve young people’s health and well-being.The course includes cookery and well-being sessions as well as fun fitness sessions and personal training pupils'. Pupils learn about the eatwell guide, food nutrition labels, healthier food alternatives with an important focus on increasing confidence and self-esteem. Participants receive 1-2-1 support for the 12 week program and can continue to attend the exercise sessions once the course has ended. Students will have a pre and post healthy growth check to keep track of how their body is changing. We are working together with Medway Council Public Health sector to deliver Fitfix they are currently funding the cooking ingredients for the participants.
