Business and Enterprise
Years 9 & 10
This year students have been introduced to the OCR Cambridge Nationals course in Enterprise and Marketing. This course consists of three individual units of study. One unit (R064) is an external exam based on Enterprise and Marketing Concepts, worth 50% of the course and two other units which are both coursework units each worth 25%. (R065 Design a Business Proposal and RO66 Market and Pitch a Business Proposal.)
To date students have been working on a combination of the exam theory unit (RO64) and their first coursework task. (RO65)
Students have been learning about the main activities that that take place in order to support a start-up business and what the key factors are to consider when starting up a business.
As well as this students have been learning about customer segmentation and how to target a customer market. The RO65 coursework unit allows students to design a product proposal to meet a business challenge scenario. Students have had to identify a customer profile for their own product design, develop market research tools and use these to complete market research for their product.
To date students have been working on the two coursework elements of their GCSE Business Studies qualification. The two units which students have been working on are Recruitment in Business and Planning an Enterprise event. Coursework for this qualification is worth 75%.
Later this year we will be preparing for the examined unit which is a one-hour external paper worth 25%. Topics covered in preparation for this will be Business Ownership, Business Finance, Marketing, Production and External Influences on a business.
To date students have been preparing for their first externally moderated piece of coursework. This unit is based on Developing a Marketing Campaign it allows students to gain an understanding of how a marketing campaign is developed. Within this unit students have been exploring the different stages and processes that a business goes through when developing its campaign. As well as this they have also had the opportunity to develop their own campaign for a given product/service. This unit is worth 25% of the overall course and is an externally assessed piece of coursework.
The second unit which students have been working on is based on Exploring Business. Within this unit students have been studying the purposes of different businesses, their structure, the effect of the external environment, and how they need to be dynamic and innovative to survive. This unit is worth 25% of the overall course and is an internally assessed piece of coursework.
This year students have been preparing for the two external elements of the BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate qualification. The first unit which students have studied is based on Developing a Marketing Campaign this unit allows students to gain an understanding of how a marketing campaign is developed. Within this unit students have been exploring the different stages and processes that a business goes through when developing its campaign. After this students then have the opportunity to develop their own campaign for a given product/service.
The second unit students are preparing for is Personal and Business Finance. The Personal finance involves students developing an understanding of why money is important and how managing your money can help prevent future financial difficulties. The business finance aspects of the unit introduces students to accounting terminology, the purpose and importance of business accounts and the different sources of finance available to businesses.
