At Hundred of Hoo our aim is to develop children’s understanding and curiosity about Religious Education. The teaching of RE skills will enable children to know and understand a range of religions and worldviews, express ideas and insights about the nature, significance and impact of religions and world views. They will be able to discuss similarities and differences between faiths as well as make links to their own beliefs and opinions. Our approach aims to nurture inquisitive minds that respect and tolerate people of all cultures, backgrounds, faith and beliefs, this is also taught and embedded within our PSHE curriculum.
Our PYP approach allows children to build upon their understanding of British Values in an age appropriate way, in order for them to become positive citizens in a forever changing community and ultimately preparing them for life and work in the modern world. Our embedded whole school vision to nurture children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development supports them to foster good relationships between all aspects covered by the protected characteristics under the Equality Act 2010.
The Kent agreed syllabus for the teaching of RE is used within all year groups at Hundred of Hoo. This scheme focuses on Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Sikhism and Buddhism along with covering non-religious viewpoints. As children progress through school they learn about key celebrations, religious buildings, books, stories, ideas and opinions in a way that suits their age, understanding and development.
The teaching of skills is progressive and promotes inquiry based, open-ended learning that encourages questioning, making comparisons, explaining, expressing, discussing, exploring religious stories and vocabulary, developing insight, knowledge, empathy and respect.
Children at The Hundred of Hoo Academy will gain a comprehensive understanding of religions within the UK and how they can learn from and work alongside each other to create community cohesion. All children will be more informed about their position in the world, and the decisions they can make impacting their future. The RE curriculum will promote inquisitive minds, respect, tolerance and understanding for all those around them including themselves. RE lessons will fulfill a vital role which is relevant to all pupils, regardless of their religious (or non- religious) background. It introduces them to a world beyond their own experience of culture and belief, enabling them to make links between their own lives and that of those in their community and in the wider world, developing an understanding of other people’s cultures, reasons for being and ways of life.
High quality learning will be undertaken and evidenced, showcasing a deep understanding of the main religions of the world, their community and their future. This evidence will be seen through using the correct vocabulary, explanations and respectful opinions, as well as evidence of PYP elements. Impact will be seen by all teachers and children enjoying the experience RE learning and understanding how it can help them in their future.
